Police Locate Stolen Explosive in Woods and Pond; Four Men Held
LYNN, Oct. 5 (AP) - A large quantity of dynamite which had been stolen from city sheds was discovered today by police investigating an extoriton plot which on Saturday sent four men to jail under heavy bail for their alleged plan to obtain $3000 from a local hotel manager under threat of bombing his establishment.
A box of dynamite was uncovered in the ground about 50 feet from the sheds in the Lynn woods district by Inspector John Muckian while in nearby Breed's pond several other sticks were brought to the surface. Police estimated that the two caches contained the 152 sticks which had been stolen.
It was on the shore of this pond that the hotel manager, Jacob White, was ordered to deposit the $3000 in a tin can last Friday.
White put a wad of paper in the can and next day police arrested Arnold Gilmore, Theodore Caisse, Erven Hemeon, and Earl Salkins, all of whom were found in the vicinity. Later, they were arraigned, charged with attempted extortion, and held in default of $10,000 bail each.
Receipt of the threatening letter by the hotel manager was the first information police had that any dynamite was missing, and it was not until a check-up had been made of the various sources of city supplies the the theft was discovered.
The letter told White that the dynamite had been taken and would be used to blast the hotel.
